Authors: Yurii Ovsinskyi, Roman Bilyk Publisher: Rastr-7 Language: Ukrainian Lviv, 2024. 132 pages, ill. ISBN 978-617-8164-42-3 A monograph with a catalogue devoted to the history of identification and registration-tax dog tokens around the world, in Ukraine and, in particular, in Pokuttia. The study draws on a wide range of documentary sources and materials, many of which are introduced into scholarly circulation for the first time, as well as on the artefacts themselves — dog tokens. The authors examine the identification and registration, fiscal and legal, sanitary and veterinary, collecting and other aspects of the phenomenon. The period from the appearance of the first tokens in Ancient Rome to 1873, when the first registration-tax token appeared in the Ukrainian lands, is covered briefly. The period from 1893 to 1943 is covered in more detail, based on the dog tokens from Pokuttia known today. The book shows the evolution of legal relations between the state and dog owners, the social conditions of keeping animals, and sanitary and veterinary measures, including the control of stray dog numbers.
